Our History

The Kilburn Cosmos RFC History began in 1996 when the club played its first games on Tiverton Green. John Tymon, an Irishman passionate about fast-moving, running rugby, founded the club. He quickly attracted an international player base from around the area. Although the origin of the name "Cosmos" has sparked much debate, John’s main goal was clear: to bring rugby to one of London’s poorest areas. This part of the city has very few sporting opportunities for the local community. The Kilburn Cosmos RFC History is a story of community, resilience, and passion for rugby.

Friendly support

Fortunately, other local clubs and Middlesex County Rugby have supported us throughout our journey. Their help has been invaluablei n the Kilburn Cosmos RFC History of growth and success.

From the 2002/03 season through to 2020/21, Kilburn Cosmos regularly fielded two senior men’s teams. However, the COVID-19 pandemic forced us to reduce this to one. We are actively rebuilding and plan to add a second men’s side within the next two years.

In 2004/05, we launched a ladies team. By 2006/07, we revitalised our junior section, which was thriving before the pandemic. From 2023 onwards, we are fully committed to relaunching and growing our junior programme. Learn more about our junior rugby development efforts.

Developing the club

We focus on developing the club, especially the youth section. Our mission is to provide rugby union opportunities in Brent—one of the UK's poorest boroughs. For the game to grow, it must take root in communities where sports access is limited. For example, Brent faces many challenges in providing sporting options to all age groups.

Facilities and Community Involvement

Originally, our home ground at Tiverton Green was far from ideal. Visiting clubs would hardly call it a pleasure. However, a significant milestone came in 2009/10 when we moved to Gladstone Park. Thanks to investment by Brent Council, we now enjoy a flat, fully drained pitch and excellent changing facilities and access to a bar that enhances our matchday experience.
