Ladies Head Coach – Kilburn Cosmos RFC
About Us
The Kilburn Cosmos RFC is a grassroots club which was formed in 1996 and remains the only Rugby Club in the London Borough of Brent. We are a thriving club, with mens, ladies, and juniors teams and upwards of 150 members. We are based in Gladstone Park (NW2).
The Ladies Team are a development side currently playing in National Challenge 2 South East (Central). We welcome players of all abilities and pride ourselves in being a sociable and fun team while working hard to development our game play and play competitively in our league. Our Club Motto is ‘Strength Through Unity’ and as a section we strive to provide a friendly, supportive and empowering space to women from all walks of life, including a diverse set of nationalities, social classes and sexuality.
In 2020 we won the Guinness Liberty Fields Fund securing £15,000. We hope to use this funding to support recruitment, coaching and outreach into our surrounding community.
Role Overview
This role will involve leading the coaching and development of the Ladies team, focusing on inclusive rugby, and developing all players to play at their full potential.
This role is being offered on a voluntary basis, but for the right coach this would be a paid position. We are committed to providing everyone with the opportunity to progress and are willing to support any individual who is looking to continue their coaching journey.
Attendance at training sessions on Tuesday evenings (up to 2 hours) and on Sundays (approx. 2 hours for training and 4 hours for match days) is expected. This commitment will reduce out of season (April – August) where we usually take part in touch and 7s tournaments. We aim to start preseason training in August.
Responsibilities will include:

- Planning and delivering engaging training sessions aligned to the game plan and development of the team.
- Developing and implementing the team’s game plan and strategy.
- Team selection and game day management with support from the team Captain.
- Facilitating a positive learning experience of all players including one on one feedback.
- Taking a tailored and holistic approach to player development including specific training for very inexperienced/new players to the sport.
- Ensuring coaching skills and knowledge are kept up to date and developed through a range of training, forums and resources, including CPD.
(General)
- Proactively driving and supporting recruitment and retention initiatives of the team and wider club.
- Liaising with Ladies Committee and management team, and wider Club Committee (as required), regarding fixtures, events, training, tournaments, recruitment, sponsorship, and other duties as appropriate.
- In the medium-long term, support the planning and development of a girls’ team including school/college outreach.
Skills and Experience
Essential
- Relevant rugby coaching qualification and/or training, or willingness to work towards one;
- Ability to develop new and experienced players;
- Personal attributes;
- Good organisational and time management skills;
- Excellent communication (written and verbal) and the ability to motivate others;
- Ability to adapt and be flexible;
- Strong leadership skills,
- Be enthusiastic and personable
- Knowledge of, and training in, safeguarding in rugby including Headcase (can be completed once in post);
- Must be willing to undergo DBS clearance.
Desirable
- Proven rugby coaching ability and knowledge of current coaching and training processes;
- RFU Level 2 Qualification or above;
- RFU First Aid Certificate (or be prepared to get the qualification);
- Experience of coaching female rugby players;
- Knowledge of competition and fixture regulation.
Next Steps
We begin pre-season training in August, and we would like to have a coach in place before the beginning for the 22/23 season. We have a current Assistant Coach who will be able to assist with induction and handover.
